ONE CAMPAIGN HITS ITS STRIDE

It Just Takes One

The Annual "It Just Takes One" Campaign is in full stride. Changing one child can change a family, and changing one family can change a neighborhood.  The "One Campaign" invites you to change one child's life.  For a gift of $500 you can support one of our kids for an entire year.  In the juvenile justice system, the cost of dealing with one young person is nearly one hundred times that amount.  Please make a difference in the life of a child.  Join the One Campaign and support one of our kids.

KIDS GROWING A GARDEN AT THE

WEST FRESNO CLUB

West Fresno Gardening Program

The Garden is growing at the West Fresno Boys & Girls Club. The large empty lot next to the clubhouse has been cleared of weeds and planted in ornamental flowers and vegetables of every kind and variety.  Staff member Jordan Good and more than fifty of the youth from the club have weeded, planted, watered, and soon will harvest their produce.

Thanks to the West Fresno Health Care Coalition, the Central Valley Health Network, Jeff Collenkark of Weedman, Inc., and Dr. Ken Grimes of the USDA for volunteer and financial help. These organizations have conducted forums on nutrition and diabetes, provided food demonstrations, and provided resources for purchasing tools, plants, and seeds.  Dr. Grimes will be conducting an eight week seminar for the Club on plant education.

Drive by West (930 Tulare St.) and watch the Garden grow.

CANDIDATE FORUM HOSTED AT ZIMMERMAN CLUB

The Building Healthy Communities Initiative (BHC) brings youth of the city together to address problems in our community. The Boys & Girls Club, in collaboration with other youth agencies in Fresno, partners in the BHC.  As part of the Initiative, the youth sponsored a forum for the city council candidates to answer questions.  The forum was held at the Zimmerman Club and led by Omar Barraza, an eighteen year old Club member.  More than 140 young people listened as the ten city council candidates answered questions posed by the youth.  Omar moderated the discussion as youth asked their questions.  In Omar's words, "It was a really good learning experience.  It taught me to be both a leader and someone who can listen to the ideas of others."

INVEST NOW WITH THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS

You are receiving this eNewsletter because you have been a partner in the mission of the Clubs.  We want to continue our partnership with you.  Due to budget crises, cities across Fresno County are cutting back on programs that serve youth.  The Clubs are needed more than ever.  We have decided not to cut staff and program during this time of need, but we have been forced to close our Clubs and furlough our staff one day per month.  We are here to serve kids.  You have joined with us in doing so.  If you able to give, your gift right now would be especially important.  Thank you.
