Chris White named Unit Director of the Year

Chris White, who has served as Unit Director of the West Boys & Girls Club (930 Tulare St.) was named Unit Director of the Year at the annual Boys & Girls Clubs staff awards dinner.  Chris was cited for his passion to make the West club the "best place for kids in the neighborhood."  Chris loves the kids and works hard with his staff to learn to know each one of the young people.  He mentors both his staff and the teens that come through the Club. Congratulations to Chris White, Unit Director of the Year.

S.T.O.P. Clubs Closing

Due to funding cuts by the Department of Probation, our three S.T.O.P. sites in the county (Fresno, Huron, Mendota) were closed on June 30.  The S.T.O.P. (Students Targeted with Opportunities for Prevention) sites served 50 to 100 youth each year in three Junior High Schools.  The clubs provided services in parent education, family counseling, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, anger management, alcohol and drug prevention, and gang prevention, among other services.  These clubs gave students a sense of belonging, usefulness and competence.  We regret the need to close these clubs and the loss of some very fine staff members.  (Please note: our regular Boys & Girls Club in Huron continues to operate. Only the S.T.O.P. site has been closed).

Pinedale Club Receives a Facelift

Pinedale Facelift

Thanks to the efforts of Board Member Sue Quigley and her crew of Volunteers from Deloitte, the Pinedale Club received a facelift on June 11. Volunteers painted the gymnasium and the library, and worked on landscaping on the outside of the building.  Our thanks to Sue and the twenty-five volunteers who worked with her.  Stop in at Pinedale (343 W. Minarets) and see the difference.

Kids Make Movies Through "Youth Tube"

This summer the kids in eight of the Boys & Girls Clubs will be producers, directors and actors in movies dealing with pregnancy prevention, drug prevention and gang prevention.  All this takes place because of a "Youth Tube" grant from the Fresno Regional Foundation.  This grant enabled the purchase of equipment and materials for movie-making and editing.  Winning videos will receive a cash prize.  Winners and their videos will be posted later this summer on our website at www.bgclubfc.org.
