Issue#14                                                             August/2011

Dear Daniel,

Career Launch

 Career Launch Logo

Career Launch is the Boys & Girls Clubs program that helps kids explore career possibilities and get ready for their first job. Through a generous grant from Bank of America, forty Club members will be participating in the program from September through December. Activities will include job shadowing, mock interviews and a tour of local banks and the call facility. The goal is that these youth will have the skills and knowledge necessary to be productive in today's labor market.

Gang Prevention Efforts

Gang Prevention Efforts of youth were honored at the Social Media event held at the Zimmerman Club August 12th. Hosted by Debra McKenzie of the Fresno County Gang Task Force, the event recognized the work of four groups at helping encourage young people to avoid gang involvement. Recognized were Promesa for murals and a music video, Fresno Street Saints for TV public service announcements, Kingdom Krylon for a mobile mural, and the Boys & Girls Clubs for videos and bus ads. Panda Express furnished lunch for the more than 75 participants.

East Fresno Rotary Club

East Fresno Rotary Club donated more than two hundred backpacks and furnished volunteers to fill them with school supplies for the kids of the Clubs. Ten Rotary members joined an equal number of youth to add pencils, notepads, erasers, markers, rulers, and other school supplies to the packs. The backpacks will be distributed among the Fresno Clubs. The total donation from the East Fresno Rotary exceeded $2,000.

Reed Lyons

Reed Lyons, AmeriCorps Vista volunteer, who has served with the Clubs for a year, finished his work on August 19th. Reed came from Illinois to work with Coaching Corp, to recruit, train and support volunteer coaches and organize sports leagues for the youth of Fresno and the County. Responsible to build capacity for youth sports, Reed led the way in organizing football, basketball, volleyball and baseball at several of the Clubs. These programs will continue following Reed's departure. "I have gained so much insight and experience working at the Clubs and am proud to say that I have been a small part of the huge positive impact they have on the youth and the community of Fresno County," Reed said.

East Fresno Kiwanis Club

East Fresno Kiwanis Club donated a portable stage to the Clubs in August. This 16 7 12 foot stage can be transported to any location and set up quickly and easily. This will facilitate musical and dramatic program presentations for our Clubs and also be used as a dais for special events. A generous gift of $4,000 from the East Fresno Kiwanis Club under the leadership of Patrick Balakian made this possible.

Career Day is Hugh Success

Career Day is Huge Success. Each year the Keystone Kids of the Clubs (Ages 14-18) plan a major project. This year the national theme was "Educate to Elevate." Keystone Clubs of the five largest Boys & Girls Clubs planned a Career Day for August 12th. The youth contacted business and professional speakers to talk about their career, and contacted Panda Express to donate lunch. The target audience was 8th and 9th graders, who are making choices about staying in school or dropping out. More than sixty youth attended the event. All attendees received a backpack filled with school supplies.

Don't forget to support the Boys & Girls Clubs. You can donate online at www.bgclubfc.org.
