Issue #12 May/2011

Dear Daniel,

Clovis Gala, May 14

Clovis Gala 2011

The 10th annual Clovis Boys & Girls Club Black Tie and Boots Gala was held at the Veteran's Memorial Hall on May 14th. The two hundred people in attendance heard from one of the youth members of the Clovis Club, as well as from Aaron Hernandez, Club Director. A wonderful banquet dinner was provided by Pardini's and many merchants and individuals donated to the silent and live auctions. When the tally is completed, the event is expected to raise $50,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Clovis. Our thanks to all who planned, donated and participated in this great event.

Girls Basketball Season Concludes with Tournment

The first annual Girls Basketball season concluded with a tournament at the El Dorado Boys & Girls Club. The West Boys & Girls Team was the overall champion. Ages of the players in the leagues ranged from 6 to 13. Parents attended the tournament to cheer on the girls. After the games, everybody enjoyed pizza and cake.

West Fresno Block Party

West Fresno Block Party 2011

The West Fresno Club, in collaboration with the EOC Youth Build, the Sanctuary SafePlace Youth Shelter and Bringing Broken Neighborhoods Back to Life, hosted a block party and health and wellness fair April 20th. The purpose was to bring resources to the community as well as to unify against violence and criminal behavior. More than thirty organizations participated and approximately 800 people attended. There were bounce houses, carnival games, and raffle prizes. The Southwest Police District helped support the event.

Boys Night Out/Girls Night Out

The annual Boys and Girls Nights Out were held on consecutive Friday nights in April. More than 60 youth participated in each night, and each young person was matched with an adult mentor for the evening. The purpose of the event is to give each young person an adult role model who will take an interest in them. The evening begins with dinner where the youth and their mentors learn to know each other. Then follows an evening of games, competitive activities, and fun events capped off with ice cream for all. If you have never been a mentor, we welcome you to consider this for next year.

The Semi-Annual Board Meeting

Fabian YOY

The Semi-Annual Board Meeting was held at the East Club on April 12th. This evening event brings together the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees, and the Administrative and Club staff. The Youth of the Year (YOY) representative from each Club was present and were introduced. The winning Youth of the Year, Fabian Leyva from the East Club, gave his winning speech. All YOY winners received a certificate and a plaque from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The top three winners received gift cards from Target and free pizza from Me N Ed's for a year. In addition, Fabian Leyva received a $3,000 scholarship from Me N Ed's. Finally, the Fresno City Council declared April 12th, 2011, as Fabian Leyva Day in the city of Fresno. Council member Sal Quintero made the presentation on behalf of the City Council. The evening was sponsored by Me N Ed's.
